MAXIMISE YOUR MATTE

Matte finishes are modern, sleek and stylish however, they are at the best of times, difficult to maintain. Cleaning a matte surface is quite different to cleaning a regular glossy surface. There are certain things you need to keep in mind to do the job correctly without affecting the matte look.

WHAT IS A MATTE OR A GLOSS SURFACE?

A matte surface is a surface that has a very uneven finish. Because of this undulation, it doesn’t reflect light in one single direction rather it redirects light in many different directions.

This gives it a very different look to a glossy surface that reflect light uniformly.

  • Matte reflection

  • Gloss reflection

THE RISK WHEN CLEANING

The risk you run when cleaning a matte surface is that you unwillingly make the surface more uniform. For example, if you would use a very light abrasive polish to clean the surface, you would actually flatten the surface, increasing the gloss level.

Further to this, if you were use products that contain waxes, silicones or oils, these materials would try to fill in the undulations in your matte surface and you would be altering the very function that makes a matte surface matte. This can also create colour distortion in darker colours.

  • Abraded surface reflection

  • Wax, oil and silicone, filling reflection
